CHAPTER 6

Preventive Maintenance: Fluids, Filters, Belts, and Hoses

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE IS HOW YOU KEEP YOUR CAR RUNNING at its best for the longest time possible with the fewest repairs. These are services you do to maintain your car when there isn’t anything wrong, per se, so problems don’t happen in the first place. I like the saying “Take care of your car, and your car will take care of you.” Preventive services are also ones that car owners who don’t trust mechanics frequently flag as scams or unnecessary upsells. Since nothing is wrong with their vehicle, they see no reason to believe that the service is needed.

The good news is that, hopefully, Chapter 5 helped you learn how to find and build a relationship with a mechanic, so this issue should resolve itself. Regardless, you don’t need to wait until your mechanic tells you that it’s time for preventive maintenance to know when it’s needed. Your owner’s manual has an entire section dedicated to it, laying out the minimum recommended intervals. You can also use the owner’s manual to help you budget for future services (see Chapter 4).

Preventive maintenance includes many of the services you’re probably familiar with, including changing oil and replacing coolant, timing belt, and spark plugs. Since the owner’s manual will tell you when to replace your fluids and filters, I’ll focus on what they do and why they need to be changed.
